update blog from email
My next post will be about how to update your blog from email. How can blogging help your organization?
Starting Today
Recently I have had a few conversation about the improper use of phone, email, text messaging, twittering, and instant messages to name a few. Here is my take on what to use each technology for:
1. Phone - If you know in advance that there will be a lot of question and answers then I believe a phone conversation is your best bet. If I find myself having trouble asking a question in email then I know it's time to pick up the phone. Sometimes nothing beats a quick 10 minute conversation that would take a lot of back and forth emails to communicate the same points.
2. Email - Great for communicating status of projects, asking simple questions to be responded to with short answers, etc. If it is a minor detail or simple question, email is sufficient.
3. Text Messaging - Honestly I'm having trouble distinguishing the difference between text messaging and Instant messaging. Here's my take. Text message if you feel the other person may be busy in a meeting for working on something that requires there complete attention and it is a simple message like "call me when you have a chance".
4. Twittering - Not sure of the longevity of this one other than the ability to have people subscribe to "what are you doing". I twitter for a few different groups and I feel the best use if to notify people about events going on or interesting articles to read. Just remember to keep it short and sweet.
4. Instant Message - I like instant message if I have a quick question and I don't have time to wait for email responses. I use instant messaging almost like stopping by someone's office to ask a quick question.
All of these technologies have there place and it is important that people use the right technology for the right reason. Above is my two cents on the best use of each. Please let me know if you disagree.
